There is a dangerous form of leadership that looks successful from the outside. Everybody needs the leader. Every decision goes through the leader. Every problem requires the leader. Nothing moves unless the leader moves it. But importance and effectiveness are not the same thing.
There is a dangerous form of leadership that looks successful from the outside. Everybody needs the leader. Every decision goes through the leader. Every problem requires the leader. Every meeting waits for the leader. Nothing moves unless the leader moves it. That leader can begin feeling extremely important. But importance and effectiveness are not the same thing.
Dependency Is Not Development
If I have to remain in the room for everything to work, I haven't finished developing the people around me. Good leadership develops capacity. The goal isn't, "They need me." The goal is, "They are becoming capable." That requires a different mindset.
Cultivate People
The Garden Model helps us understand this. You cannot pull on a plant to make it grow faster. You create the conditions for growth. You water it. Feed it. Protect it. Prune it. Give it time. Leadership development works similarly.
Give people responsibility. Allow them to make decisions. Coach them. Correct them. Encourage them. Let them solve problems. Allow them to make manageable mistakes. Then increase responsibility. That's cultivation.
Stop Being the Hero
Some leaders unknowingly build organizations around themselves. They become the answer to every problem. But your organization doesn't need you to become the hero of every story. It needs you to develop more leaders. Your job isn't simply to carry the mission. Your job is to build people capable of carrying it.
Replication Is Evidence of Health
In the Garden Model, replication comes after harvest. If something works, we ask: Can this be reproduced? Leadership should work the same way. Can the people you've developed develop other people? Can the team function without constant supervision? Can the mission survive your absence? Can the next generation take what you've built farther? That's multiplication.
Give Leadership Away
Leadership is not diminished when you give it away. It multiplies. Teach what you know. Share relationships. Open doors. Give people opportunities. Allow someone else to receive credit. Put emerging leaders in rooms where decisions are made. Trust people with meaningful responsibility. You aren't losing influence. You're creating capacity.
The Leadership Test
Here is one of the hardest questions a leader can ask: What happens if I'm not here? If everything stops, don't become proud because you're indispensable. Become concerned. Your next assignment may be developing the people who make your presence less necessary.
Because the end game of leadership isn't dependency. It's multiplication.
