The biggest challenges facing organizations and neighborhoods rarely belong to one institution. And they are rarely solved by one. That is why I keep coming back to the power of the alliance. Accomplishing together what no organization can accomplish alone.

An alliance is more than networking. Networking asks who you know. An alliance asks what you can build together. The difference is purpose. A network is a collection of contacts. An alliance is a shared commitment to a shared outcome.
Select a Shared Outcome
The strongest alliances are built around shared outcomes, not organizational agendas. In the Garden Model, you select the field together. What do we both care about enough to sacrifice for? That shared outcome is the foundation. Without it, you have a network. With it, you have an alliance.
Remove the Barrier of Self-Interest
The barrier is self-interest—each partner asking what is in it for them. Remove it by reframing around the shared outcome. When the outcome is shared, the question becomes: what does each of us uniquely bring? Not what do we get, but what do we give. That is the posture of a real alliance.
Cultivate Trust and Roles
An alliance is cultivated through trust, clear roles, and accountability. Build relationships before you build initiatives. Clarify who does what. Establish expectations. The Human Touch matters—people partner with people they trust. Invest in the relationship, and the partnership follows.
Harvest Is Expanded Capacity
The harvest of an alliance is expanded capacity—more resources, more reach, more influence, more impact than any partner could produce alone. That is the power of the alliance. It is not addition. It is multiplication. Together, we already have more than we think.
Replicate the Partnership Model
Once an alliance works, the model can replicate. New partners join. New outcomes are tackled. The capacity to serve grows. We Serve As One is not one alliance. It is a way of forming alliances that can reproduce across a city. That is how collective impact scales.
Make It Practical
- Identify one outcome you cannot accomplish alone.
- Find two partners who care about that same outcome.
- Clarify what each partner uniquely brings before asking for anything.
- Commit to one shared action that requires all of you.
The power of the alliance is the power to do what no organization can do alone. Stop merely networking. Build alliances around shared outcomes. That is how the biggest challenges get met.
