Artificial Intelligence Needs Human Wisdom

Intelligence is the ability to process. Wisdom is the ability to discern what should be processed at all.

We are building machines that can process more information than any human ever could. The question is no longer whether they can be intelligent. The question is whether we will remain wise. Artificial intelligence needs human wisdom.

I am not a technologist. I am a pastor and a leader. But I have spent enough time with leaders to know that the hardest problems are not information problems. They are wisdom problems. And wisdom is exactly what a machine, no matter how intelligent, cannot provide.

Intelligence Is Not Wisdom

Intelligence is the ability to process. Wisdom is the ability to discern what should be processed at all. A system can analyze enormous amounts of data and still cannot answer the question: what should we do, and why? That requires values, character, faith, and accountability. Those are human responsibilities, and they do not transfer to a machine.

The End Game Question Still Applies

Before you adopt any technology, ask the End Game Question: what must ultimately be true because we used this well? Technology should serve the mission. The mission should never become servant to the technology. If you cannot answer what the technology is for, you are not ready to use it. You are about to be used by it.

Select Where AI Actually Helps

In the Garden Model, selection means knowing where to focus. With AI, that means asking: where can this actually help us accomplish the mission? Not everywhere. Some tasks are well-suited to automation. Others—care, presence, discernment, relationship—are not. Select carefully. The Human Touch cannot be automated, and it should not be.

Remove the Barrier of Efficiency Worship

The barrier is efficiency worship—the belief that faster and cheaper is always better. Remove it. You can become incredibly efficient at doing something that does not matter. Efficiency is a tool, not a god. When it becomes the highest good, we lose the things that actually transform lives.

Cultivate People, Not Just Output

The real question with AI is not what it can do. It is what we should do with it. Use it to reduce the burdens that keep people from being present. Use it to free up time for the Human Touch, not to replace it. Cultivate people. Develop leaders. Build relationships. Those are the things that produce lasting impact, and no machine can do them for you.

Harvest Is Human Flourishing

The harvest is not maximum output. It is human flourishing—people who are cared for, developed, and connected. If AI helps us produce that, use it. If it pulls us away from it, set limits. The measure is not how much we can do. It is whether the people we serve are flourishing.

Replicate Wisdom, Not Just Systems

We can replicate systems easily with technology. Replicating wisdom is harder. It happens person to person, leader to leader, over time. That is the work that matters most in the age of AI—developing people who can discern, decide, and lead with character. Leaders develop leaders. That chain is what carries wisdom forward.

Make It Practical

  • Ask of every AI tool: what is this for, and what is it replacing?
  • Use AI to free up time for presence, not to avoid presence.
  • Never delegate a decision that requires wisdom to a system that only has intelligence.
  • Invest more in developing people, not less, as technology advances.

Artificial intelligence needs human wisdom. The faster the technology becomes, the more important wisdom becomes. Do not let the tools make you wise about the wrong things. Stay human. Stay present. Stay wise.
